BUSY SUMMER AHEAD FOR
CHIPPEWA PARK
A host of organizations came together on Thursday to announce a packed schedule for Chippewa Park this summer. “With the Tourist Camp opening on Friday, May 30, the Rides & Concessions starting their weekend operations for June on May 31 Chippewa Park is back in operation for its 104th year” noted Iain Angus, Secretary of The Friends of Chippewa Park. He added “that there so far are a total of 38 outdoor event days booked and 11 days where the pavilion is booked and there are approximately 700 children taking part in the various summer camps operated by Recreation and Culture.”
“The opening weekend will see the first of three weekends featuring a two-day dog agility trial hosted by Sleeping Giant Dog Sports followed the next weekend by an outdoor movie the "Captain America: Brave New World" on June 7th and then the Kite Festival the next day” noted The Friends of Chippewa Park Secretary, Iain Angus.
Later in June is the return of the En Plein Air Workshop where local artist Biljana Baker will assist water colour artists in honing their landscaping skills at the park.
According to Calli Graham, Aquatics Program Supervisor with Culture and Recreation, daily lifeguard service at Chippewa’s Sandy Beach will start on June 28, from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM. She was pleased to report that thanks to the efforts of The Friends of Chippewa Park three change rooms are now available at Sandy Beach.
The annual Sundays in the Park concert series will return starting June 29. The free outdoor concerts held on the north side of the pavilion will run from 2 to 4 pm through to August 31 and will feature a variety of local entertainers. For the first time since 1967 Folk music will return to Chippewa Park on the evening of Thursday, July 10 featuring Thunder Bay’s own Rodney Brown.
Rounding out the major events is the 5 day NOW Judo Super Camp that brings together students and teachers from across the country. It will be held from July 22 to Aug 1.
